JUNE 6, MIRI – My Disciple Red Book class for Senadin Methodist Preaching Centre (SMPC) Curtin undergraduates covered Chapter 26 last Saturday night (June 4). We are scheduled to complete the remaining 8 chapters by this September.

Usually the session is held at SMPC but last Saturday was special. I took the opportunity to host a farewell dinner to fellow Disciple student Jacky Chew from Kuala Lumpur. The Year Two Chemical Engineering Curtin undergraduate shall be continuing his tertiary education in Perth for the next semester.

Started April last year, the Red Book class (in English) was initiated by Rev. Jabez Tiong. The good shepherd of SMPC had blessed me with the task of facilitator. Nine people enrolled. One has since dropped out.

A graduation requirement for every student in the SMPC Disciple Class is to at least experience one mission trip while undertaking the 34-chapter study.

On March 20, 2016, together with four members from Gan En Methodist Church – Stephen Pan, Barbara Ruran, Kon Sang Haw, Jacky Chew, Dean Ling, Vincent Tan, Darren Gan and Brian Chew visited Rh. Kam, Rh. Ree and Rh. Turan at Sg. Buri.

Sg. Buri is about an hour’s drive from the city.

Jacky Chew shares his thoughts on the trip:

On a sunny and warm afternoon, a group of Christian students studying Disciple Red Book set out on their mission trip.

The trip is a necessity for the Disciple Course graduation. We went to the rural outskirts of Miri. Our journey started from Gan En Methodist Church to three secluded longhouses that are nevertheless accessible by vehicles.

The first destination took an hour to reach because of potholes and uneven surfaces of winding road. We would describe this experience as ‘interesting’; like gentle earthquake simulation! The road was dangerous because at certain points it was narrow and there were no road barriers alongside to prevent vehicles from accidentally falling into valleys. But thank God, our drivers were skillful and they knew the terrain well because of frequent visitations. Though there was nothing to worry about, it was still a terrifying experience for us.

Every student had to contribute to the mission trip through our pre-assigned roles. Brian was in charge of Bible-sharing, Barbara – testimony, Dean and I – Praise and Worship, while Vincent, Sang Haw and Stephen – Children’s Sunday School. Before the trip, we confessed that we were anxious and nervous because we had no prior experience doing our respective tasks except for Barbara.

We were unable to do Praise and Worship in the first two longhouses due to respect given to a recently-bereaved family and relatives.

Our program began with testimony and Bible-characters sharing instead. The Children’s Sunday School was conducted concurrently with the main service. Vincent, Sang Haw and Stephen led the children to an enclosed room in the longhouse. Because Dean and I did not do Praise and Worship, we were able to assist in the Sunday School. Dean, the assigned pianist, had to switch his task in helping out in the Sunday School for the entire mission trip. Because of miscommunication, no keyboard or piano was available on site and we did not bring our own.

In the main service, Barbara shared her interesting testimony on her struggles with God when she was a teenager. The story was really impactful as the residents listened attentively since they easily understood Barbara due to her fluency in BM. After the testimony, Brian shared about Esther’s Story and related it to his struggles during his A- Level in MCKL (Methodist College Kuala Lumpur). Brian also encountered difficulties in translating his story to the audience in BM but managed to pull through with Barbara’s help.

The Sunday School activities were very energetic. The children and teachers got along well. The children also had coloring work. During the Bible story-telling, the children listened attentively. At the end of the service, time was allocated for the residents to request for intersession. We prayed for them on the spot. Most common prayer requests were healing of health challenges.

We have learned so much from this mission trip. We experienced rich, indigenous culture from the interactive sessions with the residents and understood more about longhouses. We were able to glorify God through our ministry as well as strengthening our faith. We achieved our trip’s purpose!

Undoubtedly after the trip, we appreciate our lives more. Our bonding in the Disciple Class became stronger! This mission trip could be the start of an auspicious effect in our Christian life. We could emerge to be a ripple effect for future mission trips that involve evangelism, community engagement/service etc., producing potential future leaders in the Christian community, all glory and praise to God!

Language may have been the barrier and difficulty I faced to convey to the locals. But I managed to pull through and they understood the message. I believe the Word of God is truly universal and without bounds; it speaks through the heart, soul and Holy Spirit. – Brian Chew

“第一次”音乐布道会 11.9.2015

禧恩布道处 于2015年 9月 11日，晚上 7点半 至 9点半， 假 Curtin 大学 举办了一场音乐会，歌手是池德成牧师。这场音乐会 取名为 “第一次”，是以音乐为媒介，布道为目的而进行的。布道会透过音乐的旋律与感动,勾起了Curtin学生们的回忆，带领着他们回到初入大学的时候，重新体会在大学生活中遇过很多的“第一次” , 并思想生命的意义吗？除了诗歌，布道会也透过见证分享 以及 陪谈员的配合, 将福音这好消息分享给262 位的出席者。

My Pa’Adang Story 29.6.2015 to 6.7.2015

MY PA’ ADANG STORY by Colin Wong

GREETINGS and may the peace of the Lord be with you!

I joined Pa’ Adang mission trip as I was invited by my senior, Jason Soh. At first I was reluctant because I intended to proceed with my research project during the semester break. However, he asked me this question: “God or study comes first?” I was shaken and persuaded. I was then assigned to the Children’s Sunday School ministry.

Before the mission trip, our pastor kept on reminding members that we were not going for a holiday. To serve, we had to adapt and be prepared for any circumstances and changes, he warned us.

The life in Pa’Adang is completely different from that of a city. There are no 24-hours electricity supply, no internet connection, no air-conditioning and inadequate water supply (where all men including pastor were required to bathe in the river). Due to the need of building a new church, all men were required to do physical labor (to move stones and sand) while women were mostly in charge for the Children’s Ministry and meal preparations. I was excited and energized on the first day work as it was a new experience.

Nonetheless my physical strength started to diminish after a few days. I was tired and unenthusiastic. My feet and hands were bitten by sand flies. The irritation made me uncomfortable and frustrated. I began to complain inside my heart. I forgot the objective of this mission trip, that was – to serve.

Thank God, my attitude and thoughts changed when I was working with Pastor Jabez. He did not complain – neither did he show any grievances or dissatisfaction albeit the trying circumstances. At that moment, I felt embarrassed and ashamed. I realized how weak I was – spiritually, physically and emotionally! Instead of complaining, I could have thanked God that He provided us good weather, breathtaking scenery and sufficient food and drinks. Although some fell sick, I could thank God that He has not let anyone of us be injured or harmed. If only I could be faithful in these little things, then I can be entrusted with the larger ones.

On the fifth day, the second mission trip team arrived in the evening. The team comprised of brothers and sisters -in-Christ with distinguished professions. Due to the rain, they arrived slightly later than expected. Therefore they had to work overnight after dinner to build the foundation. I joined them. When I saw all of them working collaboratively and wholeheartedly, my heart was deeply moved. Everyone was faithful in their work for the Lord, and not for men. The scene reminded me that we are each part of the body of Christ, and we are gifted in different areas. When we act on the gifts given and work together heartily, we can do great things.

I hope that I am able to apply my knowledge not only in my future job, but also in God’s work. I hope I can serve more willingly and faithfully.

Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.”

My Pa’ Adang Story by Jason Soh

IT WAS a wonderful 8-day mission trip travelling from Miri to Lawas, and from Lawas to Pa’ Adang, and back.

I spent a total of 6 days there to have a better experience with God. Technology has been one of the factors that causes the ignorance of God’s creation. Throughout this journey without any distraction from hi-tech devices, I was to able see Mother Nature with a better insight.

I could see and hear the cries of the needy to build up their physical and spiritual needs. From this mission trip, I have realized that it is insufficient to support the natives financially only; manpower is also very crucial. One of the limitations of the natives has is education. Therefore it will be good to focus on education to secure the future of the younger generations and create awareness in the world’s happenings.

The sermon preached by Pastor Yahya struck me in living my daily life. He preached “Strengthening our faith in the world today”. An example given by him was “building houses on rock and building houses on sand”. He reiterated an underlying basis that we have to be strong in our faith by reading the Bible and doing God’s work to prevent our “house” to fall.

Furthermore the preaching from Pastor Yahya brought a great impact to my life. He spoke on his acceptance of Christ and his experience of being a pastor in Pa’ Adang. It was a great testimony seeing how God has chosen His people to commence His ministry in the great place Pa Adang. It is my pleasure to meet Pastor Yahya and to know more about him. His sacrifice of moving from the urban town to a rural place has humbled me greatly.

In Matthew 19:26 – Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” This has inspired me that “with God everything is possible”. No matter how small and insignificant we are, if we have faith in God, everything is achievable.

My Pa’Adang Story by Adam Tiong

AS WE disembarked next to the river, I jumped off the pickup truck and stretched. A little distance away was the 50-meter wide river that we had to cross to reach Pa’Adang, our mission field. We all began to unload all the equipment, materials and personal luggage. We began forming a relay line across the river to move all the things from one side of the river to the other.

Our mission to Pa’ Adang was to assist the Penan people living there to construct a new church so that their old church can be converted into a school. Pa’ Adang is not accessible by road hence all the materials used for construction have to be carried into the Pa’Adang village.

Our mission team’s objective was to pave the way for the next mission team that would be arriving the following week. That team was led by Rev. Ling Biu and would continue the construction of the new church which they hoped to complete. Our team would attempt to collect as many raw materials such as sand and stones for the team, including doing some other preparatory work such as road construction and hostel building.

While I was helping to carry all our equipment from the river to the village, I decided to carry two items; a heavy piece of roofing felt and another smaller plastic bag filled with odds and ends. It was approximately one kilometer walk to the village. At the beginning, it was relatively easy even though the roofing felt was quite heavy. Overtime though as I began to tire, I couldn’t hold the roofing felt properly as the plastic bag of odd and ends became quite troublesome.

Looking back while writing this testimony, I realized that this situation reflects certain parts of my walk with God. In becoming a disciple of Christ, I have learned to carry my Cross through life. However along the way we become so bogged down with other worries of life that carrying the cross seems harder than ever and we are sorely tempted to put it down. The opposite in fact should be the case. By setting aside all other worries and focusing on carrying our cross, our journey through life will be a lot easier and purposeful with Christ by our side.

For the first two days that we were there, the men were divided into two groups. One group was to collect and transport sand and stones from the nearby riverside to the building site, and another group to clear and prepare a temporary road up to the building site from the existing church. I volunteered to join the group that was going to create the road, seeing as I had never done that before.

Under the supervision of Bro. Gilbert Hii, we began to clear and level a road from the bottom of the hill where the old church is located, up to the top of the hill where the building site for the new church is located. We began by clearing away the undergrowth that blocked a straight path up to the building site, and then leveling any uneven ground with gardening hoes and shoveling the excess dirt into holes or low parts of the road to make it more even.

During the first day working on the road, I decided to do all I could and put all my energy into it. I tried to work and hard and as fast as I could, and at the beginning declined to take a break even when I felt tired. By the end of that first day I had lost all my energy and even fell sick going into the second day. I had to take the second afternoon off to recover from my sickness.

While recovering, I realized that I had fallen into the trap of taking too much pride in myself. Most of the time, we become prideful in the form of boasting or recognition. However from this experience, I realized that choosing not to admit our weakness is also a form of pride that is equally dangerous. By admitting that we are weak or lost in certain parts of our lives, we can then allow God help us in those areas. By allowing God to work in our lives, we can then benefit ourselves, the people around us and the work we do for our Lord.

Going back to work the following day, I decided to go join the group collecting sand and stones at the riverbank, as I heard that there would be more shade there so I could recover better. Working slowly, I understood that I had reached my limit the day before by overextending myself in the work process. By focusing too much on the work and what I myself could do, I forgot to focus on God in the process of the mission. It was a sharp reminder that we all are God’s tools and we need to be humble enough to set aside all our worries and pride to let God work through us.

All throughout the mission I was constantly reminded at the beauty of God’s creation. As we woke up at around 6am every morning for daily devotion, we could see the breaking of dawn as the sunlight hits the hilltops surrounding Pa’Adang that were still covered with low hanging clouds. Cold crisp air gave way to a clean fresh earthly smell as the day progressed to noontime. After work each day, all the men would bathe in the river to conserve water in the hostel. The river is very clean and we used it for bathing and washing our clothes. There is a part of the river that rushes over a bed of rocks which is ideal for scrubbing our clothes. The water is clean and cold, and rushes along quite fast which makes it ideal for rinsing. In the deeper part of the river, the current slows and turns greenish as it becomes deeper, making a very refreshing scene. As night, the air turns fresh and cold again, and due to the lack of night activities, we sit around the dining table talking and singing along to songs from our mission pamphlets until we went off to sleep around 10 pm.

This mission trip helped me understand more about myself in terms of my values and understanding God. It also enabled me to be closer to God’s creation; to understand why and how we go about doing His will. Although it was a tough week, all in all it was one of the most memorable missions I have ever been and I thank the Lord for leading me to Pa’Adang.

聖樂讚美晚會《你的名何等尊貴榮耀》 6.6.2015

2015年6月6日（六）晚間七點半，位於美里市禧納定區一間店屋傳來陣陣扣人心弦的歌聲。這裡是衛理禧恩佈道處，一間大約150人參加崇拜的小堂會。從來沒有人想過，這麼小的佈道處有幸接待60名民都魯的聖歌團及聖詠團，舉辦聖樂讚美晚會《你的名何等尊貴榮耀》。

沒有寬敞舒適的場地，沒有一流耀眼的音響及燈光，也沒有專業的鋼琴；有的是一顆愛主的心，有的是讚美的靈，以及對聖樂的熱愛。 聖樂不是一種表演，而是一種讚美；聖樂不是個人秀，而是一個團隊；聖樂更不是高舉自己，而是高舉基督！誠如聖歌團指揮馮國宏的分享，唯有基督徒懂得音樂，因為音樂是從神而來，而且是唱給上帝聽的。 詩班員不僅要達到合音，更要達到合一。若不合一，如何能唱出和諧優美的音符呢？

講求紀律的聖樂服事更講求生命。因為每一首聖詩的背後都有一個故事，透過歌詞和旋律去述說對上帝的讚美和感恩。 若詩班員本身沒有如此的體會，就無法呈現出震撼人心的聖詩，反而流於表面的技巧。感謝主！ 當晚的每一首聖詩對聽眾來說都是一種對話。只要閉上雙眼，用心體會，你就彷彿聽見上帝直接對你說話，鼓勵你，激勵你，挑戰你要靠著主給你信心去面對人生的風風雨雨。

            台上十分鐘，台下十年工。 聖樂服事是一條漫長的道路。 一首好的聖詩從作詞作曲，到詩班的練習和呈現，每一個環節都需有神的恩手帶領及聖靈的感動。今天，神依然透過最棒的樂器（歌喉）和最美的心（謙卑委身的心）來向世人宣告《神的名是何等尊貴榮耀》。

A Spiritual Adventure by Vivien

From growing up in a Christian home, the words “short term mission” was never odd to me as I always heard of it in the church. More often than not, there will be testimony sharing by brothers or sisters in Christ to share about their experience during the mission trip. It is quite happy and a bit of envious to see everyone that went out to the world to spread gospel and work for God. As for me, I never join a mission trip before not even once. However, I always have my excuses to not joining any mission trip like lazy, busy or no friends going together, despite much persuasion by others.

Remembering back last year, I decided to register for Disciple 1 class without having much thought. In order for us to complete Disciple 1 class at SMCGC, it will take us three semesters which is equivalent to one and a half year. Upon completion of Disciple 1 class, I am graduating from my Bachelor of Degree as well. Thus, it would be a remarkable moment before I end my university life. Thus, through Disciple 1 program, I had the opportunity to participate in short term mission at Tudan Methodist Church.

During the first day of evangelism, everything went perfectly smooth. Every people we visited were friendly and willing to let us speak to them about the four spiritual laws. Throughout the evangelism, I have noticed that most of them are Christian but seldom going to church. Reasons they mentioned were being too busy working, taking care of small children and elders at home, no transportation to name a few. It is quite disheartening to note that there are many Christians out there but drawn away from God and they chose the self-directed life instead of Christ directed life.

The most unforgettable moment during this short term mission is on the second day of door-to-door evangelism. I was grouped with Mok Fei and our first stop was a Chinese family house. They had stated their religion is Buddhism but we insisted to share with them about the four spiritual laws and assure them it won’t be long. Lastly, they allowed us to enter. We knew that spreading gospel to Chinese family is not easy especially to those who are very devoted to their own religion. As I was not fluent in Mandarin, I let Mok Fei do the talking to a mother and a son. The mother is quiet throughout the session and the son continuously interrupted Mok Fei, saying that God is not fair during the time he believes in Christ and he felt helpless at all times. According to him when he was at his most helpless situation, he saw a figure (Buddha or something like that) reveals to him and sort of lend him a helping hand. Thus, he felt that he gained strength and never believes in Christ anymore as God never help him. There and then, I realized how a belief of a human to God can be easily shaken and overtaken by Satan. When the son asked us a lot of questions about his doubts to God, I do not know how to answer him. I just remain quiet throughout the time as I do not know how to handle it. Imagine my relief when Mok Fei can answer him nicely and with much patience. At that moment, I felt ashamed of myself for being unable to help Mok Fei for I have only a little knowledge about the Bible. Nevertheless, I know that this is one of the obstacles given by God to me as training to become a better Christian.

“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” Titus 2:11-12


During this mission trip at Tudan Methodist Church, God does reveal himself to me in many ways. By God’s guide:-
1. I had the little courage to share the gospel with people during the door-to-door evangelism and prayer walking.
2. I stepped out from the comfort zone to speak in front of many people.
3. Do not judge the book by its cover. Some people’s appearances might be unkempt and their surrounding was trashy and run-down but they turned out to be very friendly and most willingly to hear what we wanted to say to them.
4. I speak fluent Bahasa Malaysia whereby not everyone can actually do. This is God’s gift to me and make me realized that I had use it in a right place now.
5. He showed me about me about genuine worship with Him by waking up early for morning devotion.
6. He showed me about unity in teams working together. I thank the Lord for leading me through this mission trip together with my Disciple 1 classmates and let me achieve bit of maturity in Christian life.

All in all, I have learned a lot during short term mission at Tudan Methodist Church. To be frank, it inspires me to join more short term missions whenever possible “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose”- Philippians 2:13.

Mission trip: Tudan Methodist Church by AU

The mission trip to Tudan Methodist Church was my first time in the mission field. In the beginning, when I knew the date of this mission trip fell on 27^th June, I felt conflicted due to my foundation final exam being on 7^th of July. However I still wanted to challenge myself, and feeling that this is my responsibility as a Christian, I made the final decision to go for this trip. When the date of the trip approached, my body started showing a lot of red blots, and those made me felt itchy. A close friend who had this similar ailment before gave me a skin ointment and advised me not to go. However, feeling that this being a challenge from God, I still joined with a brave heart.

All seemed well until a sudden announcement that my Accounting class replacement would be on 27^th of June. I immediately told Tsy that I would be late to the trip. She kindly arranged for me to participate after the night fellowship. At the same time, I also told my situation to Pastor Jabez, and his wife prescribed me medication to further treat my skin problem. I felt really touched and am still really appreciative of them. I felt guilty as well for burdening the people around me, but I made up my mind to do better in the remaining days of the mission trip.

On the second day, my group leader, JC, gave me the task to evangelize. He told me that since I had missed it on the first day, I had to do it now on the second day. At that moment, I felt discouraged because I did not seem to know much on how. I prayed to God to give me courage to face this evangelism challenge. When we reached our destination, I saw a garbage dump area filled with uncountable piles of rubbish. My groupmate, AW, told me that the people living here survive on the dirty pond water with floating rubbish for bathing and drinking, and the villagers here are seriously poverty-stricken.

Our group split into two for the day. I was with JC and visited a house belonging to Christian. My group members showed me how to spread the gospel to indigenous people there. Later, we visited a second house, and I knew it was my turn. As my group approached, the people looked at us. I quickly took out the evangelism booklet 'Empat Hukum Rohani' (Four Spiritual Laws) and met a woman to read through. After I finished, I then asked some questions to her, but could not seem to illicit any response. My teammate, John, tried explaining as well, but still no response from her. We felt disappointed, but praise the Lord that her husband responded well. We felt delighted to be accepted. We then continued visiting others, and were glad to find most of them were already Christians. When we asked them about their belief in God, they responded excitedly with tears flowing from their eyes. Their desires to know more about God as well as their expressions encouraged me.

After all that, we went home. After lunch break, we went to visit another area behind Tudan Church. Gabriel and some Tudan church mates were in my group. We walked. The people of that area were more unwelcoming as compared to the villagers in the garbage dump. They closed their doors tightly despite being at home. However, we successfully visited six houses. Four of them said that they believed while two others were still deciding. We felt encouraged to hear some of their decisions. I felt that our toils for this evangelism trip were worth it.

In conclusion, God loves us, and this we know very well. However, most people are blinded by material possessions, and they could not feel God's love. Through this journey, I found that indigenous people, being poorer as compared to city people, desired more for God's love. God's love is fair to everyone. He does not care how rich or poor a human is. Everyone has the privilege to receive God's love and care. This mission trip taught me a big lesson: we have the responsibility to spread the gospel to needy people. Although there are obstacles from spreading the gospel, if we trust that God is with us, we can overcome every obstructions. PRAISE TO OUR FATHER GOD!

Tudan Methodist Church

短宣对我而言并不是一个很陌生的词句。还记得每次的短宣，我都兴致勃勃，带着满腔热血的参加。这次也不例外，只是，多了一点点对语言障碍恐惧的心。2014年6月27-29日就是我们门徒班去卫理杜当堂短宣的好日子。我们必须以国语为我们主要的语言方能和他们沟通。

短宣其中一个环节就是逐家佈道。我们到了附近一些居民的住家和垃圾场开始我们的寻羊计划。让我非常惊讶的事，他们都非常的友善。我们介绍了自己和告诉他们我们想拜访他们，他们就直接了当的开了门，让我们进去了。他们也很愿意听我们分享福音。由于我的国语是半桶水，所以有时不能很有效把自己想表达的告诉他们，而他们虽然是友族同胞，但国语也是半桶水，所以也不能完全明白我们想表达的。可是，他们那愿意花时间听我们传福音，愿意开门欢迎我们的举动，深深打动了我的心。到了垃圾场，那里就是他们的家。那里的蚊子非常好客，我们才一下车，就直接一嘴过来迎接我们呢！撇开蚊子不说，我们进到了他们家，看到了他们的苦境，连一年50令吉的学费都很难交的出来，让我很是羞愧。我把福音传给了他们，也从他们身上学习了知足常乐这一门重要的课。


我在短宣中负责领唱。感谢神让我有一位在国语事工服侍神的妈妈，所以就从她那里偷师，学习如何用国语带领会众一同敬拜神。也感谢神，虽然在预备的过程中有许多的波折，也牺牲了我和团员们在短宣中仅有的一个小时休息时间来练唱，可是辛苦的成果总是甜美，把一切荣耀都归神！

在杜当堂我也认识了很多友族朋友，他们陪我们一起佈道，也参与我们的敬拜赞美。他们的琴艺，鼓艺，歌艺真是让我佩服。他们每个人至少都会一种乐器！那是让我刮目相看的。希望他们能继续在音乐方面继续事奉神。

最后，我很开心能够参与这次的短宣，短短的三天，认识了新朋友，更认识了自己的短宣战友，也和神有更近一步的关系。哥林多後書 5:17 说道：17若有人在基督里，他就是新造的人，旧事已过，都变成新的了。
